Ancient History behind Murudeshwar-

It traces back to the era of Ramayana. It is said that the Hindu gods attained immortality by worshipping Linga named Atma Linga. Ravana too wanted to attain this immortality by obtaining it, but as it belonged to Lord Shiva, he started to worship Lord Shiva with whole devotion.

Pleased by his worshipping Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked him what he wanted. On this Ravana told him that he wanted to have the Atma Linga. Lord Shiva agreed for it and presented him the Atma Linga. on one condition that it should not be placed on the ground until he reaches the Lanka, as if the Linga was placed over the ground it was impossible to move it.

Ravana agreed to what Mahadeva said and started his journey towards Lanka. Lord Vishnu, when came to know about this, got panicked as if the Ravana obtained the immortality then it would cause great havoc on earth. And to stop this, he went to seek help from Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha then devised a plan.

Ganesha’s Trick  –

When Ravana was near Gokarna, Shri Mahavishnu blotted out the sun to give the appearance of dusk. So as it would appear that it is evening time. Meanwhile, Lord Ganesha went in front of Ravana disguised into a Brahmin boy. As Ravana never missed to do evening prayer rituals. Now it was a kind of difficult for him to do evening prayer with the Atma Linga in his hands.

So he asked the Brahmin boy to help him. He asked him to hold the Atma Linga in his hands until he completes his evening prayer. On this, the Brahmin boy said to him that he would call Ravana for thrice. and if Ravana will not come whenever he will call him. Then he would place the Atma Linga on the ground.

Ravana returned from prayer and saw that the Brahmin boy has already placed the Atma Linga on the ground and now the time which appeared to be the evening was daylight again because the sun has removed his illusion. Ravana now came to know that he was tricked by time and got furious.

Ravana’s Anger –

He exerted force on Linga to move it, to take it to Lanka, but due to the force exerted by him, the pieces of Linga shattered everywhere. One such piece of Linga is said to be fallen in the present-day of Surathkhal where the Sadashiv temple has been built around this piece of Linga.
